Preliminary project development
The terrain in Riyadh is typically flat and sandy due to its desert climate. On the outskirts of the city, in a privileged location with views of the mountains, we developed the project for a luxury house where all spaces are oriented towards this stunning landscape.
ADAPTATION TO THE LOCAL CLIMATE
During the site investigation, it was interesting to discover that Riyadh and Los Cabos are located approximately on the same parallel. From this, we deduced that the climate strategies applied in our architecture would also work there.
We chose to use rammed earth walls for all the spaces, as this material, due to its high thermal mass, can delay the entry of heat during the day, keeping the spaces cool, and release it during the night, thus regulating the lower temperatures at that time.
We decided to use lattice screens to filter sunlight into the interior, allowing the views and natural light in all spaces without increasing indoor temperatures. Additionally, we ensured that all spaces had cross ventilation, which reduces the use of air conditioning throughout the year.
A DESIGN CUSTOMIZED TO THE CLIENT'S NEEDS
The project's program responded to the local culture. We delved into the lifestyle of those who would inhabit the house to ensure that the spaces we designed met their needs and ways of living.
The house was designed as a minimalist rectangular volume that directs the view from all spaces towards the mountains to the north. An entrance surrounded by palm trees was created, roofed with a wooden pergola and protected by a lattice screen that shields the house from the afternoon sun, creating pleasant, well-lit, and ventilated spaces inside the home.
Guest's House
The guest house adopts the same architectural language as the main house but curves in response to its location. This way, it wraps around the mountain in front of it, enhancing the views. This house features spacious and flexible social areas, designed to accommodate various types of events and gatherings.
